People’s Council Asks for ICE officers to be removed from County Jail

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Friday, Jan. 9. 2026

The People’s Council for Justice Reform emailed a letter to the seven current members of the Oklahoma County Criminal Justice Authority today asking “the Oklahoma County Jail Trust to vote to remove ICE agents from the county jail and eliminate the 48-hour hold the agency has used to illegally detain people without due process.”

In light of the brutal killing of Renee Nicole Good two days ago by ICE agents in Minneapolis, as well as an ongoing systemic record of racial profiling, discrimination, and violence over the past year, we strongly believe this action is necessary to protect the rights and safety of residents in Oklahoma County. We are asking the Trust to add the item to the agenda for the Jan. 12 meeting. Here is the full content of the letter, which was sent to Trust members this afternoon:

TO: Members of Oklahoma County Criminal Justice Authority

Friday, Jan. 9, 2026

In light of ongoing constitutional violations committed by ICE agents across America and Oklahoma County, culminating in the January 7th murder of an American citizen by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, the People’s Council for Justice Reform is asking the Oklahoma County Jail Trust to vote to remove ICE agents from the county jail and eliminate the 48-hour hold the agency has used to illegally detain people without due process.

In September of 2020, the Trust voted 4-2 to remove ICE agents from the jail and eliminate the 48-hour hold, but the vote was later negated on a technicality. Since that time, racial profiling, discrimination, and even violence by ICE have escalated to an alarming degree, and due process in issues involving immigration has largely been eliminated by the federal government.

It is the duty of county officials and appointed governmental bodies to keep our county safe and protect the rights of all residents, and it’s important to note that the county has no legal obligation to allow ICE to have unfettered access to our jail and the detainees in our custody. We are asking the Trust to place an item on the agenda for the meeting scheduled for Monday, January 12th at 1:30PM. We believe this is a crisis situation and warrants immediate action.

Thank you for addressing this important issue to help bring stability and safety to all residents of Oklahoma County.

We believe this action is imperative, and will decrease the risk of families being targeted and potentially torn apart without due process. Please join us in this important fight to keep Oklahoma County safe. Plan to arrive early, if you plan to speak you must sign up before 1:30PM.
